Academic Technology supports a wide range of applications and integrations to enhance the teaching and learning experience. These applications provide additional features, tools, and resources that can help educators and students make the most out of their online learning environment. Below, you'll find a list of all applications supported by Academic Technology as well as applications that we are in the process of evaluating.

Kaltura Video Approved The Kaltura Video tool allows faculty members to easily embed videos into their Canvas courses. With Kaltura, faculty can upload and manage videos within the platform and make them accessible to students directly within their course content. The tables above list all tools and applications that are Approved, Approved with Exceptions, Pending, Not Approved, Testing, Requested, and Deprecated. Please note that tools marked as Pending, Testing, or Requested are not guaranteed to be integrated. Tools that are Deprecated will no longer be supported and, if integrated, will be removed from the LMS in the near future.

Want to see a new Academic Technology application or integration added to Canvas? Academic Technology can help. All campus-supported software must go through the Information Technology Procurement Review (ITPR) process to ensure it is secure, accessible, and technically compatible. Chico State is dedicated to providing accessible and secure tools to its campus community, and the ITPR process is a key part of this commitment. This commitment is required by Chancellor's Office policy and state law to make campus resources and tools accessible and secure for everyone.

Before submitting a request, consider the following questions
  • Will your college/department pay for this software?
  • Will this software be used by a whole college or multiple colleges?
  • Is it really free? Are there student fees?
  • Is there an alternative tool already approved for campus use?

Each new integration requires testing, IT Procurement Review, installation, support pages, and user support resources.

If you want to request a new tool, please start the integration process below and Learning Technologies will start the IT Procurement Review process. If the tool requires funding or if you want to request a free tool for the whole campus, please contact us using the link below and we'll work with you. Requesting an integration is not a guarantee that the software will be installed. All criteria must be met before installation can be considered.

Please note that this process can take 6-10 weeks to fully complete, so it is best to make requests at least one term before the tool will be used.

How the Canvas Integration Process Works

Implementing a new tool into Canvas necessitates the involvement of several teams outside of Academic Technology, including the university's security and accessibility teams in addition to the vendor. Academic Technology takes great care to ensure all aspects of Learning Management System is functional and accessible. Below is an overview of the steps that happen when you request a new integration with Canvas.

Gather Requirements

The first step in the integration process is to gather requirements. This involves determining what the faculty and students need from the tool and what the tool should be able to do. This step is important because it helps to ensure that the right tool is selected for the job and that the tool meets the needs of those who will use it. During this phase, Academic Technology (ATEC) will reach out to the vendor with a standardized set of questions to streamline security and accessibility reviews

Discussion at LMS Advisory Meeting

After the initial requirements have been gathered, the tool will be discussed at an LMS Advisory Meeting. This meeting includes representatives from various functional stakeholders across the university who provide guidance and feedback on the Learning Management System.

The purpose of this meeting is to ensure that the proposed tool aligns with the university's strategic goals and that any concerns or potential issues are addressed before proceeding with the ITPR process. The discussion may cover topics such as the tool's alignment with pedagogical goals, its impact on existing workflows and processes, and any potential risks or concerns related to data security or privacy.

Technical Compatibility Review

Learning Technology Services (LTS), the team responsible for managing the LMS, is responsible for conducting the technical compatibility review. This review evaluates whether the tool is compatible with Canvas and any additional considerations that need to be taken with the tool.

Security Review

Information Security (ISEC) is responsible for conducting the security review. This review is designed to evaluate whether a tool meets the university's security and privacy standards. Some examples of information the security review uncovers include:

  1. Whether the tool sells students' data to third parties (Example: popular discussion platform Piazza sold data about students' grades and what classes they took)
  2. Whether the tool uses adequate security practices (Example:  a bug in Cengage's LMS integration caused the tool to not verify whether requests came from the correct Learning Management System, allowing an attacker to impersonate any student)
  3. Whether the tool keeps student data secured (Example: McGraw Hill left more than 117 million files, including student grades and personal information, completely open to the public)

Tools that integrate with Canvas are able to access various types of student information, including names, email addresses, and even grades and student activity in the course. It is important for the university to adopt tools that respect your students' data. The security review helps to identify and address these security issues to ensure your students' data is safe.

Accessibility Review

Technology Equity and Inclusion (TEIN) is responsible for conducting the accessibility review. This review is designed to evaluate the accessibility of the tool and ensure that it meets the university's accessibility standards. The accessibility review is an important step in the ITPR process because it helps to ensure that the tool is accessible to all users, including those with disabilities.

Inaccessible software can prevent students and instructors from accessing information or completing tasks, leading to frustration and exclusion. In addition, inaccessible software can result in lowered academic performance and even legal consequences for the institution if the tool is found to be in violation of accessibility laws. Inaccessible integrations can also negatively impact the reputation of the institution and reduce the overall quality of the educational experience for everyone.

Implementation in a Testing Environment

After the technical compatibility review is completed, the tool is implemented in a testing environment. This allows the tool to be tested in a real-world scenario before it is implemented in the production environment. This step is important because it helps to ensure that the tool is functional and that any issues are addressed before the tool is implemented in the production environment.

Functional Testing

Technology and Learning Program (TLP) and Learning Technology Services (LTS) are responsible for conducting functional testing. This testing is designed to evaluate the functionality of the tool and ensure that it meets the requirements gathered in step 1. The functional testing is an important step in the approval process because it helps to ensure that the tool performs as advertised.

Final Go/No-Go Decision

After the functional testing is completed, the LMS Advisory Group will evaluate whether the tool should be implemented in the production environment. If the tool passes this step, Academic Technology will schedule a change to deploy the tool to the production environment.

Generate Documentation

After the tool is approved, documentation is generated. This documentation includes information about the tool, how it integrates with Canvas, and how it is used. This step is important because it helps to ensure that the tool is properly documented and that the university has a record of the tool.

Deploy Tool to the Production Environment

Once the tool has passed all of the previous steps, it can be implemented in the production environment during a regular maintenance window. This step involves deploying the tool to the Canvas environment and configuring any necessary settings. It is important to ensure that the tool is implemented correctly and that it does not negatively impact other areas of the LMS. Once the tool has been successfully implemented, it is made available to faculty and students for use in their courses.

Ongoing Maintenance and Support

Once the tool is implemented, ongoing maintenance, updates, bug fixes, and support are provided through a combination of Learning Technology Services, the Technology & Learning Program, and the tool vendor. This ongoing maintenance helps to ensure that the tool continues to function properly and that any issues are addressed in a timely manner.
