Turnitin Feedback Studio is a powerful tool that allows instructors to provide comprehensive feedback and ensure the integrity of student submissions. This article outlines the step-by-step process for creating a Turnitin assignment using the Turnitin External Tool within Canvas.
Note: the Turnitin External Tool is not needed if you simply want to use Turnitin's plagiarism detection features. The external tool is only needed if you want to use Turnitin's grading interface for your assignments. Prerequisites
Before you begin, ensure that the Turnitin External Tool has been enabled for your course. If not, request the Turnitin Tool to be enabled for your course. This step is not needed if you just want to use Turnitin's Plagiarism detection platform.
Step-by-Step Instructions

Access the Assignments Page:
- Log in to your Canvas account.
- Navigate to your desired course.
- Select the Assignments tab in the course navigation menu.
- Choose Turnitin LTI 1.3:
- In the assignments page, select the three vertical dots (⋮) next to the + Assignment button.
- A dropdown menu will appear. From this menu, select Turnitin LTI 1.3.

Provide Assignment Details:
- Once you've selected Turnitin LTI 1.3, a new set of options will appear for configuring the Turnitin assignment.
- Fill in the assignment details, including the assignment name, instructions, point value, start date, due date, and feedback release date.

Customize Turnitin Settings:
- Configure additional Turnitin settings in the Optional Settings based on your preferences. These may include options for the similarity report, ETS e-rater, and PeerMark (peer review). Adjust the settings according to your assignment requirements.

Save and Submit:
- Before saving, review the assignment details to ensure accuracy.
- Once you've configured the assignment details and Turnitin settings, select Save to save your assignment.
Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues while creating a Turnitin assignment, try the following troubleshooting steps:
- Unable to find Turnitin LTI 1.3: Ensure that the Turnitin External Tool is enabled for your course. If not, request the Turnitin Tool to be enabled.
- Assignment details not saving: Double-check that all required fields (assignment name, point value, start date, due date) are filled out correctly.
- Students unable to submit: Verify that the assignment availability dates are correctly set and that the assignment is published.
- Turnitin settings not applying: Ensure that you save your settings after making adjustments in the Optional Settings section.
- Error messages: If you receive error messages, note the exact error and contact your institution's technical support for assistance.
