Enrolling in Multifactor Authentication (Duo)

Quick Links: | First-time Setup | Enroll a new device | Configure Device Options |

Duo's self-enrollment process makes it easy to register your phone and install the Duo Mobile application on your smartphone or tablet. Use the following guide to walk through the steps of enrolling a new device.

Supported Browsers: Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Opera.

If you have previously set up Duo and need to re-set up the app on a new device or get an error that Duo is "Disabled", you may be prompted for an authentication code or QR code. If so, follow the "Adding a New Device" section of this article.

First-time Enrollment

If you are new to Chico State, the first time you sign into a Campus Service, you will be prompted to complete a self-enrollment for Duo.

Welcome Screen

The welcome screen should appear when you open a web browser on the computer and attempt to sign in to the Portal. Click Next to begin enrolling your device.

Start Setup

Type Your Phone Number

Select your country from the drop-down list and type your phone number. Use the number of your smartphone or cell phone that you'll have with you when you're logging in to a Duo-protected service. You can also choose I have a tablet if you want to enroll an iPad or Android tablet.

Double-check that you entered it correctly and click Add phone number

Enter phone number

Install Duo Mobile

Duo Mobile is an app that runs on your smartphone and helps you authenticate quickly and easily. Without it, you'll still be able to log in using a Duo Token, but for the best experience, we recommend that you use Duo Mobile.

Follow the platform-specific instructions on the screen to install Duo Mobile. After installing Duo Mobile return to the enrollment window.

Activate Duo Mobile

Activating the app links it to your account so you can use it for authentication.

On iPhone, Android, and Windows Phones (or tablets) activate Duo Mobile by scanning the QR Code with the app's built-in QR Code scanner.

Can't scan the QR Code? Click Get an activation link instead and follow the instructions.

After activating your device, you should receive a confirmation screen.

Added Duo Mobile confirmation

Congratulations!

Your device is ready to approve Duo authentication requests. Click Send me a Push to give it a try. All you need to do is tap Approve on the Duo login request received on your phone.

Adding a New Device

Duo Prompt Screen

If you are already enrolled in Duo and trying to set up a new device, you will not receive the same self-enrollment pop-up for Duo. Instead, you will see the Duo prompt screen. You will need to click Other options then Manage devices.

NOTE: This method of adding a new device will require you to either have the old device, a Duo Token, or be able to receive a text message (if the phone number has not changed) to authenticate. If you have no other way to add a device, put in a ticket here: https://support.csuchico.edu/TDClient/1984/Portal/Requests/ServiceDet?ID=24788

Manage Devices under Other options

You will have to authenticate in order to get to the next screen. Choose to Send a Push to the old device, Enter a Passcode from the token generator, or choose Enter a Passcode then Text me New Codes to receive an SMS code. After authenticating in, you'll see a screen that says "You're Verified. Sending you to the devices page".

Choose Your Authentication Device

On the Devices page, you will be able to see all devices attached to your account. If this is the same phone number, but a new device, you can select the I have a new phone option. From here, you can scan a QR Code or get an activation link sent to your device. If this is a new device and a new phone number, you will choose the Add a device option and walk through the on-screen steps.

I have a new phone option

Congratulations! Your device is ready to approve Duo authentication requests. After clicking Back to login, you can test the Duo Push option to give it a try. All you need to do is tap Approve on the Duo login request received on your phone.

Configuring Device Options (optional)

You can use the Devices page to give your phone a more descriptive name, remove old devices, or you can click Add a device to start the enrollment process again and add a second phone or another authenticator.
