Introduction
In Canvas, instructors can require students to complete one module before starting another by setting prerequisites. This ensures students engage with content in a specific order and builds a more scaffolded learning experience.
This article explains how to add prerequisites between modules in a Canvas course.
Prerequisites
- You must be enrolled in the course as an instructor or designer.
- The modules being linked must already exist in your course.
- The prerequisite module should already have requirements configured (e.g., "view all items").
Step-by-Step Instructions
To add a prerequisite between two Canvas modules, do the following:
- Open your course in Canvas.
- Next to the module you want to restrict access to, select the ⋮ (three dots) icon [1], then select Edit.
- Scroll down to the Prerequisites section [2].
- Select +Add Prerequisite.
- Choose the module that must be completed first.
- Select Update Module to save your changes.
Now, students must complete the prerequisite module before they can access the restricted module.
Troubleshooting
- Prerequisite options will only appear if the other module has at least one requirement configured.
- Students can only unlock modules sequentially if requirements and prerequisites are configured consistently across modules.
- If the prerequisite module is unpublished, it won’t appear as an option.
