Computing Purchases (prices below are approximate and include tax and shipping)

Chico State has chosen Dell, Microsoft, and Apple as our enterprise desktop and laptop vendors. Our central configuration management system for Windows machines has built-in support for Microsoft drivers and Dell has provided a suite of management tools that can be used to keep workstation firmware and drivers up to date. A similar solution (Jamf) has been implemented for Apple devices. This means that when a "zero-day" patch is released (a patch for a vulnerability that is being actively exploited by bad actors), IT can quickly push the patch to our entire fleet of workstations and can more effectively protect the University's data and infrastructure.

Purchasing a computer from another enterprise hardware vendor like HP or Lenovo would require the campus to implement a whole new suite of management tools to properly maintain those devices, which increases the cost and complexity of our computer management infrastructure. Purchasing consumer-grade computers like ASUS, Acer, or MSI (among others) means that there may not even be tools available to provide centralized management of drivers and firmware, which opens the campus up to vulnerabilities in outdated software.

Other benefits of standardizing enterprise workstation vendors include more comprehensive testing for upgrades and new software, consistent configuration policies, better warranty support, and overall lower total cost of ownership for the institution.

If a Dell, Microsoft, or Apple device cannot meet the needs of a particular specialized use case, an exception for another vendor can be made. Please note that price alone will not justify an exception, since the initial purchase price is only one component of the overall total cost of the technology.

Sustainability

In an effort to be sustainable, used items that still meet campus standards are occasionally available from ITSS. If you think a used item might meet your needs, please note that in your purchase ticket.

Warranty

Dell systems include a 3-year warranty (included in the prices below). Accidental Damage Protection is optional for all Dell laptops (not included in prices below).

All Apple systems come with a standard 1-year warranty; an AppleCare extended warranty is optional (2 or 3 years based upon the item purchased).

Microsoft Surface systems come with a standard 1-year warranty; a 3 or 4 year Microsoft Complete warranty is optional, which adds Accidental Damage coverage.  Microsoft Complete must be purchased within 45 days of device purchase.

Time to Receive Purchases

Apple, Dell, and Microsoft purchases typically take four to six weeks to arrive on campus. A number of factors impact the time of arrival (CPU or memory shortages, pre-built vs custom-built configurations, etc.).

CURRENT STATUS - wait times are trending back to pre-pandemic expectations.
Pre-pandemic orders would typically arrive on campus in four to six weeks.
Pandemic orders typically take eight to twelve weeks to arrive on campus.
