Understanding cross-listed enrollment displays
Instructors who have courses cross-listed in Canvas may encounter a confusing issue where it appears that students are enrolled in multiple sections. This can lead to misunderstandings about student enrollment and impact class management and communication.
This occurs because Canvas retains records of previous enrollments when students switch sections. As a result, the course roster may show students in multiple sections even though they are officially enrolled in only one.
This behavior is expected in cross-listed courses and reflects how Canvas maintains enrollment history.
View accurate section rosters
To verify a student’s enrollment or view an accurate roster:
- To verify a student’s current section, select the student’s name in the course’s People page. A menu will open showing the section they are currently enrolled in.

- For a full roster by section, select New Analytics from the course navigation menu.
- In New Analytics, select Students.
- Use the section dropdown to choose the section you want to view. Only students currently enrolled in that section will be displayed.
