Some servers or services may require an "service account" to perform automatic authenticated tasks. These accounts are not intended to be used by individuals, but rather by applications or scripts that need to run in an automated fashion. Service accounts require very complex passwords, so they won’t need their password changed as often as personal accounts.
Service accounts are required for Chico servers and services that require LDAP authentication.
Service accounts can also be requested for labs with wireless devices that are not assigned to particular users, but need to access the Eduroam secure wireless network.
