Logging in to Box

You can access Box at csuchico.app.box.com or by signing into the Chico State Portal and clicking the Box icon. Use your Chico State email address and password to sign in.

Who gets a Box account?

Box accounts are automatically provisioned for:

  • New Chico State staff, faculty, visiting faculty, instructors, and student employees
  • Staff and Faculty Future Hire employees
  • AS employees (but not AS student employees)
  • CSE employees and student employees
  • PCE employees

If you do not fall into one of these categories, submit a request for a New Box User Account

Box Error: Invalid Login Credentials

Some people have reported getting an error stating "Invalid Login Credentials" when signing into Box.

This error can occur for several reasons:

  1. You don’t have a Chico State Box account. Only current faculty, staff, student employees, AS employees, and CSE employees are automatically granted access.
  2. Your account may not have been created yet. Box accounts are generated overnight after your PeopleSoft record is updated. Please try again the next day.

Box Problem: Box Apps Don't Work

Box offers two apps:

  • Box Drive: Shows Box as a network drive on your computer.
  • Box Edit: Allows you to open and edit online Box files directly in desktop applications like Word or Excel.

Restart your computer after installing either application. If you're still having trouble, follow the steps below based on the app you're using.

Box Edit Issues

If you're trying to open a file from Box in your browser and it doesn't open correctly, the issue is likely with Box Edit.

  • Error: "No compatible application was found for this file type"
This usually means Box Edit didn’t install correctly.
    1. Re-run the Box Edit installer and restart your computer.
    2. If that doesn’t work, manually uninstall Box Edit.
    3. Download and reinstall it from the Box Downloads page, then restart again.
  • Error: "The download could not be validated"
This is often caused by cookies being disabled in your browser. Enable cookies and try again.

Note: If you're using a campus–managed computer, you should install or uninstall Box Edit using the Application Catalog. If this doesn't work, contact IT Support Services.

Box Drive Issues

If you're having trouble with Box Drive, check the following:

  • Box Drive supports only one user per computer login. It won’t function properly on shared or generic accounts.
  • Other issues (such as syncing errors or missing files) may need to be escalated.
