Using recorded lectures with AI-generated transcripts (via Kaltura) opens new ways to make course content more accessible to all learners. These tools help faculty support a variety of learning preferences, languages, and cognitive needs by offering content in multiple formats. This guide will walk you through ways to enhance accessibility and equity by using these transcripts to create inclusive learning experiences.
Prerequisites
- Access to recorded lectures in Kaltura
- Transcripts generated by Kaltura’s AI transcription tool
- Familiarity with uploading and sharing videos in Canvas
- Optional: Tools for editing or reformatting transcript text (Word, Google Docs, etc.)
Step-by-Step Instructions
To improve accessibility and equity using AI transcripts, do the following:
- From your Kaltura My Media page, select a video to work with.
- Open the video and select Actions, then Caption & Enrich to view or download the transcript.
- Review and edit the transcript to correct any significant errors or technical terms.
- Reformat the transcript to provide multimodal learning options:
-
Create simplified summaries using plain language.
-
Use text-to-speech tools to generate audio summaries.
-
Offer translations of key sections using services like DeepL or Google Translate.
- Add alternative explanations or analogies for complex topics to support neurodiverse learners.
- Share the modified transcript in your Canvas course, alongside the video, under a module titled “Alternative Learning Resources.”
- If using Canvas annotations or collaborative tools like Hypothesis, enable students to highlight and comment directly on the transcript.
- Consider embedding transcript excerpts with visuals like concept maps or diagrams for visual learners.
Troubleshooting
- If the transcript doesn’t appear in Kaltura, verify the Captioning process completed (it can take up to 24 hours after upload).
- Transcripts may not be 100% accurate—prioritize correcting terminology and concepts, not filler words.
- If you're not seeing captioning options, make sure your video is properly uploaded under My Media, not elsewhere.
