Unable to See CSU Fully Online Class in Canvas

Quick Links: | Environment | Solution | Root Cause |

Students enrolled in a CSU Fully Online class may report that they cannot access their course through Canvas. This issue typically arises at the start of the semester and causes confusion about where and how to access course materials. It affects both Chico State students taking a class at another CSU and students from other CSU campuses taking a class hosted by Chico State.

Environment

This article applies to you if all of the following are true:

  • You are enrolled in a CSU Fully Online class
  • You are unable to locate or access the course in your current campus's Canvas
  • You know which CSU campus is offering the course (Chico State or another campus)

Solution

To fix the issue where you cannot access your CSU Fully Online course, follow these steps based on your home campus:

If your home campus is Chico State:

You are taking a course hosted by another CSU campus.

  1. Identify the CSU campus offering your course.
  2. Go to the Canvas login page for that campus. You can find a list of all CSU Canvas URLs at the following page:
Canvas Login Links for CSU Campuses
  3. Log in using the credentials you set up for that campus. You may need to activate your guest student account or retrieve login info via that campus's IT support.

If your home campus is another CSU:

You are taking a course hosted by Chico State.

  1. Go to Chico State’s Canvas site: https://canvas.csuchico.edu
  2. Log in using the Chico State username and password issued to you after enrollment.

Now you should be able to access your CSU Fully Online course through the correct Canvas instance.

Root Cause

When CSU students enroll in Fully Online courses, the class is hosted in the Canvas instance of the teaching campus, not their home campus. Canvas access is not centralized across CSU campuses, so students must log in directly to the Canvas environment of the campus offering the course. Confusion occurs when students check only their home campus's Canvas site.
