Generate Quizzes with Chat2QTI

Chat2QTI is a tool that helps instructors create Canvas-compatible quizzes quickly and easily using natural language prompts. Instead of manually writing questions and formatting them, you can describe what you want, and Chat2QTI will generate quiz items in the correct QTI format for direct import into Canvas. This guide walks you through the process of using Chat2QTI to build and download quizzes, and then import them into your Canvas course.

Prerequisites

  • Access to a Canvas course with TeacherTA, or Designer role

  • Familiarity with basic Canvas navigation (e.g., course settings, imports)

  • Access to Chat2QTI via ChatGPT Edu

Step-by-Step Instructions

To generate and import a Canvas quiz using Chat2QTI, do the following:

  1. Access Chat2QTI

    You can start using Chat2QTI in one of two ways:

  2. Describe the questions you want
    Start by telling Chat2QTI the type of quiz questions you need. You can request:

    Examples:

    • Specific question types, e.g., multiple choice, true/false, short answer

    • A number of questions and a topic area

    • Questions based on pasted or uploaded content (e.g., a study guide or slides)

    • “Create a multiple choice question about photosynthesis.”

    • “I want 5 true/false questions about the American Revolution.”

    • “Make a short-answer question asking who discovered penicillin.”

  3. Let Chat2QTI generate the questions
    Chat2QTI will generate:

    You don’t need to worry about XML or formatting—Chat2QTI handles all of that.

    • Quiz questions and answers

    • Correct answer selection

    • Optional feedback for each response

    • Proper formatting in QTI-compatible format for Canvas

  4. Approve the request
    When the questions are ready, may see a prompt on screen. Select Allow to confirm Chat2QTI’s request to build and store the quiz package.

    When Chat2QTI finishes the request, it will return:

    • A download link for your QTI .zip file

    • A preview link so you can review the questions before downloading

  5. Download and import into Canvas

    Now your quiz will appear in the Quizzes area of your Canvas course.

    • Select the Download link to get your QTI .zip file

    • In your Canvas course, go to Settings from the course navigation menu

    • Select Import Course Content

    • From the Content Type dropdown, select QTI .zip file

    • Choose the downloaded file and select Import

Troubleshooting

  • If your QTI file fails to import into Canvas, confirm the .zip file is not corrupted or incomplete.
  • If quiz items don't appear as expected, preview them using the provided link before importing. You can ask Chat2QTI to fix questions that re incorrect
  • Make sure you are importing the content into the correct course and with the correct role permissions.
