Overview
Starting on June 9th, 2025, Chico State is introducing a new feature to help the campus community better identify emails from senders outside the university. This feature adds a small "External" tag to the top of emails from non-Chico State sources.

"External" Tag FAQs
What Does the "External" Tag Mean?
-
Informational: The "External" tag is meant to give you a heads-up that the email comes from someone outside Chico State.
-
Not a Guarantee of Safety: Just because an email has the "External" tag doesn’t mean it’s harmful, and emails without the tag are not guaranteed to be safe. The tag simply provides extra information.
How Should I Handle These Emails?
Use your best judgment when deciding whether to trust an email, whether it has the "External" tag or not. If something seems suspicious (like unexpected requests for personal information or payment), pause and verify before taking any action. You can review our guide to Identifying Phishing Emails on the Knowledge Base.
Why Is This Feature Helpful?
-
It helps make external emails easier to spot, so you can take a closer look if needed.
-
It’s part of our ongoing effort to improve email security for the Chico State community.
