Kaltura videos embedded in Canvas courses on or after January 9th, 2025 are autoplaying when users open a page, assignment, discussion, quiz, announcement, or other content item containing the videos. This issue can disrupt the user experience and cause confusion for both instructors and students.
Environment
This article is relevant to you if:
- You are embedding or accessing Kaltura videos within a Canvas course.
- The videos were embedded after January 9th, 2025
- The videos are autoplaying without any user interaction.
Solution
Currently, there is no way to solve the issue of Kaltura videos autoplaying in Canvas. A fix will be implemented on January 30th. Videos embedded between January 9th and January 30th will not need to be re-embedded.
Root Cause
When videos are embedded using the Kaltura integration in Canvas, the default behavior includes autoplay being enabled in certain scenarios. This behavior is due to a bug in how Kaltura determines whether autoplay should be enabled for a particular player.
