Creating rubrics in Gradescope helps streamline grading by providing clear, predefined criteria. This guide explains how to create and customize a rubric within Gradescope's grading interface. You will learn how to add rubric items, assign point values, and format descriptions to ensure consistency and fairness when grading assignments. Gradescope is a separate platform from Canvas that helps instructors streamline grading hand-written assignments.
Prerequisites
- Access to a Gradescope course where you are an instructor or grader.
- Assignments uploaded to Gradescope for grading.
- Basic familiarity with Gradescope’s interface.
Step-by-Step Instructions
To create a rubric in Gradescope, do the following:
- In the grading interface, select Create Rubric from the toolbar.
- Add rubric items by specifying:
- A Point Value (positive or negative depending on how the item will affect the grade).
- A Description for each rubric item. You can use markdown formatting (e.g., bold, italics, lists) to structure and emphasize text.
- Repeat step 2 for each criterion you want to include in the rubric.
- Once the rubric is complete, use it to score individual questions by assigning the corresponding rubric item(s) during the grading process.
Now your rubric is created and applied to your grading, ensuring consistent evaluation criteria across all submissions.
Troubleshooting
- Rubric not saving changes: Ensure that you have saved the rubric after editing. If the problem persists, try refreshing the page or contacting Gradescope support.
- Markdown not rendering properly: Double-check the markdown syntax in your rubric description. Incorrect syntax might prevent proper formatting.
