Creating a rubric in Gradescope

Rubrics in Gradescope are created directly within the grading interface and can be reused while grading submissions.

  1. Open the assignment and enter the grading interface.
  2. Select Create Rubric from the grading toolbar.
  3. Add rubric items by defining:
    • A Point Value, which can be positive or negative depending on how it affects the score
    • A Description explaining the grading criterion; markdown formatting may be used to organize or emphasize text
  4. Repeat this process for each grading criterion you want to include.
  5. Apply rubric items to student submissions while grading to assign scores consistently.

Once created, the rubric helps ensure consistent evaluation across all submissions.

Resolving common rubric issues in Gradescope

  • Rubric changes are not saving: Confirm that changes were saved before leaving the grading interface. If the issue continues, refresh the page and try again.
  • Markdown formatting does not display correctly: Review the markdown syntax in the rubric description, as incorrect formatting can prevent proper rendering.
