Enable Gradescope for your Course

Gradescope is a popular tool integrated into Canvas, which allows instructors to streamline grading and feedback for a variety of assignments such as homework, exams, and quizzes. This guide will walk you through the steps of creating a course in Gradescope through Canvas, and then setting up assignments. By linking Gradescope with Canvas, you can manage assignments and grades more efficiently.

Prerequisites

  • You must have a Canvas course where you want to use Gradescope.
  • Instructor access to the Canvas course.
  • Gradescope should be enabled in your Canvas course navigation menu.
  • Basic familiarity with using Canvas.

Step-by-Step Instructions

To create a Gradescope course via Canvas, do the following:

  1. Navigate to your Canvas course.
  2. In the course sidebar, select Gradescope. If the Gradescope link isn't available, go to Settings > Navigation and enable the Gradescope link.
  3. The Canvas course will automatically appear in Gradescope. If this doesn't happen:
    • Select Link to Existing Gradescope Course if a Gradescope course is already available.
    • Alternatively, select the option to create a new course in Gradescope.

Next, you need to add assignments to your course in Gradescope. To add assignments in Gradescope, do the following

  1. In Gradescope, select Create Assignment.
  2. Choose the assignment type, such as Homework, Exam, or other available options.
  3. Set the assignment details:
    • Specify the Due Date and Due Time.
    • Upload any assignment templates or documents (if necessary).
  4. To automatically sync grades with Canvas, under Post Grades to Canvas, choose the appropriate sync option.

Now, your course is linked with Gradescope, and assignments are set up to automatically sync grades back to Canvas.

Troubleshooting

  • If you don't see the Gradescope link in your Canvas course navigation, you may need to enable it from Settings > Navigation in Canvas.
  • For any errors with grade syncing, ensure the "Post Grades to Canvas" option is correctly selected for each assignment.
