After editing the point value of a quiz question in Canvas, the student's grades did not update in the Gradebook, even though the quiz submission reflected the new point value. This issue affects instructors who expect automatic regrading after changing point values, potentially leading to discrepancies between displayed quiz scores and final grades.
Environment
- Canvas
- Quizzes
- Modifying a quiz with student submissions
Solution
To fix the discrepancy between the quiz score and the Gradebook when adjusting point values for a quiz question, follow these steps:
- Moderate the quiz to allow the student to retake the quiz.
- From the course Quizzes section, select the specific quiz.
- Select Moderate This Quiz from the quiz options menu.
- Next to the student’s name, select Allow this student an extra attempt.
- Notify the student that they can retake the quiz to update their score in the Gradebook.
Alternatively, you can manually adjust the student’s score in the Gradebook without requiring a retake:
- Navigate to Grades in the course sidebar.
- Find the student’s quiz submission.
- Manually input the corrected score based on the new point value.
Now the student's grade will match the updated point values, reflecting the intended quiz scoring.
Root Cause
When editing a quiz in Canvas, the regrade feature only works with specific types of quiz question changes, such as correcting answers for multiple-choice or true/false questions. However, changing a question's point value, adding or removing questions, or making edits to question text does not trigger the quiz regrade function. As a result, the Gradebook does not automatically update based on point value changes after the quiz has been submitted.
