Some users may notice the "Disallow Threaded Replies" setting on their existing discussion boards in Canvas, potentially altering the expected behavior of discussions. This change might affect discussions where threaded replies were either unintentionally disabled or enabled due to a recent update on August 14th, 2024. Users might find this setting checked or unchecked, even if they had not configured it that way.
Environment
- Canvas
- Discussions
- Discussions created before August 14th, 2024
Solution
To fix the issue of unintended "Disallow Threaded Replies" settings in your discussions, the instructor should follow these steps:
- Navigate to your course and select Discussions from the course menu.
- Locate the discussion where you notice the issue and select Edit.
- Look for the Disallow Threaded Replies checkbox:
- If you wish to allow threaded replies, ensure the checkbox is unchecked.
- If you do not want threaded replies, ensure the checkbox is checked.
- After making the necessary changes, select Save to apply the settings.
Now, your discussion will reflect the desired setting, either allowing or disallowing threaded replies as per your preference.
Root Cause
When the "Disallow Threaded Replies" feature was introduced on August 14th, 2024, it was applied retroactively to existing discussions. Since Chico State has always used the new Discussions interface, the system couldn't differentiate between discussions where threading was intentionally disabled and those where threading hadn't yet been applied. This led to the "Disallow Threaded Replies" setting being automatically checked for some discussions, even if the instructor did not intend for it to be.
