Error: Videos Recorded on Apple Devices Not Playing
Environment
- Occurs on Apple devices (iPhone, iPad)
- Kaltura webcam recorder
Issue
Users attempting to use Kaltura’s webcam recorder on some Apple devices may encounter an issue where the video records and previews correctly, but after upload, it either fails to convert or doesn't play properly. This significantly affects the user's ability to successfully share videos via Kaltura.
Solution
- Record using Photo Booth (Mac) or the Camera app (iPhone/iPad).
- Transfer the video to your computer, if needed.
- Upload the video manually to Kaltura using the Media Upload option.
- Alternatively, use Zoom with cloud recording enabled — the video will automatically upload to Kaltura.
These methods bypass conversion issues caused by direct recording in Kaltura on certain iOS devices.
Root Cause
The issue is likely caused by a compatibility mismatch between Safari’s WebRTC implementation (used in iOS/macOS Safari) and Kaltura’s transcoding engine (FFMPEG). Some Safari versions record video in a format that Kaltura’s backend cannot process, resulting in silent failures during conversion. In some cases, this results in a black screen with only audio, or playback failures altogether.
Error: Kaltura "Unable to Stop Recording" or "Low Memory" Error
Environment
- macOS 15 devices
- Kaltura screen and webcam recorder
- Device has sufficient Storage (disk) and Memory (RAM)
Issue
After reinstalling Kaltura or updating to macOS 15, users may receive the error messages: "Unable to stop recording" or "Low memory". Despite having enough system resources, Kaltura fails to start or stop the recording.
Solution
- Open the System Settings application on your Mac.
- Navigate to Privacy & Security.
- Go to Screen and Audio Recording.
- Enable permissions for KalturaRecorder / Kaltura.
- If you are on a campus-managed device, you may be prompted for admin credentials. Contact IT Support Services.
- Fully quit and restart the Kaltura software.
This should restore full recording functionality.
Root Cause
macOS 15 introduces enhanced privacy settings that can block screen or audio recording access. If permissions are not explicitly granted after an OS update or software reinstall, Kaltura may not function correctly. These permission issues result in unhandled errors, leading to generic messages such as “Unable to stop recording” or “Low memory.”
