Why won't videos recorded on Apple devices play correctly in Kaltura?

Quick Links: | Environment | Solution | Root Cause |

Users attempting to use Kaltura's webcam recorder on some Apple devices, like iPhone and iPad, may encounter issues. The recorder allows video recording and even previews correctly, but after uploading, the video might fail to convert or play properly. This issue significantly affects the functionality of Kaltura on these devices, hindering users from successfully uploading and sharing their videos.

Environment

  • Occurs on Apple devices, specifically newer iPhone and iPad models.
  • Kaltura webcam recorder

Solution

To avoid issues with video recording on Kaltura using iPhone or iPad, use an alternative recording method. Follow these steps:

  1. Record your video using Photo Booth on your Mac or the Camera app on your device.
  2. Transfer the video to your computer, if necessary.
  3. Upload the video to Kaltura manually through the Media Upload option.
  4. Alternatively, use Zoom to record your video to the cloud. The video will automatically transfer to Kaltura.

These methods circumvent the conversion issues encountered with direct recordings through Kaltura's webcam feature on certain Apple devices.

Root Cause

The exact root cause of the video conversion and playback failures is not definitively known. However, we believe it's related to the compatibility between Safari's WebRTC support, which Kaltura uses for video capture, and Kaltura's transcoding tool, FFMPEG. Newer versions of Safari on these devices record video in a format that Kaltura's automated conversion processes is unable to handle, often resulting in silent conversion failure. In some cases, this can lead to videos transcoding with only audio and a black screen, or not playing at all. By recording with an alternative method, users can bypass these issues, ensuring their videos process and play as expected.
