This guide provides instructions on how to ensure your privacy during Zoom meetings by muting your microphone and stopping your video. It also covers how to set your preferences for these features to be off by default, helping you manage your participation in virtual meetings more effectively and in accordance with your privacy concerns.

- A Zoom account
- Access to Zoom desktop or mobile application
Step-by-Step Instructions
To Mute Your Microphone and Stop Your Video During a Meeting
- To mute your microphone, select the microphone button in the lower left corner of the meeting screen, or press ALT + A on your keyboard.
- To stop your video, select the camera button in the lower left corner of the meeting screen, or press ALT + V on your keyboard.

To Set Your Preferences for Joining Meetings
In the Zoom Desktop Application
- Log into the Zoom desktop application.
- Select the gear icon to open Settings.
- Select the Video menu.
- Enable Turn off my video when joining a meeting.
- Select the Audio menu.
- Enable Mute my microphone when joining a meeting.
In the Zoom Mobile Application
- Log into the Zoom mobile application.
- Tap Settings.
- Enable Always mute my microphone.
- Enable Always turn off my video.
Troubleshooting
- If your video or audio automatically turns on despite setting preferences, ensure you have the latest version of the Zoom application and check the settings again as they may reset after an update.
- For issues related to not being able to mute the microphone or stop the video, ensure you have the necessary permissions within the meeting, as the host might have restricted these actions.
