Students may be unexpectedly kicked out of a Canvas quiz before completing it due to the "Available until" setting. This issue can arise from various date settings in Canvas, such as quiz/assignment availability dates, module availability dates, or section end dates. Faculty must carefully manage these settings, especially for students with accommodations for extra time, to ensure they do not prematurely end the quiz.
Environment
- Canvas
- Quizzes and Assignments
- Assignment availability dates
Solution
To prevent students from being kicked out of a quiz before completion due to availability date settings, follow these steps:
- Review the Settings for your quiz to ensure the "Available until" date and time provide sufficient leeway for all students, including those with accommodations. Alternatively, use differentiated due dates to ensure students with accommodations have appropriate availability dates.
- Check the Module settings if the quiz is part of a module, to verify that the module's availability dates do not conflict with the quiz timing.
- In Course Settings > Sections, inspect the section end dates to ensure they do not precede the quiz's "Available until" date.
- For students with accommodations, consider extending the "Available until" time specifically for those students within the quiz settings.
By following these steps, you ensure that all students, particularly those with extra time accommodations, have adequate time to complete the quiz without being prematurely exited.
Root Cause
When setting up a quiz in Canvas, the "Available until" date and time act as the final limit for quiz access, overriding any remaining time a student has based on the quiz timer. This issue is compounded by the multiple layers of availability settings in Canvas (quiz, module, and section dates), which can inadvertently lead to premature quiz termination.
