Box has a number of applications that dramatically improve the usefulness of Box. These include:
- Box (also known as Box Drive): Allows you to access your Box files directly on your local computer
- Box Edit: Allows you to open documents in applications (e.g., Word, Excel) directly from the Box website
- Box for Office: Allows you to save files from Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, etc.) directly into Box. Allows you to attach files from Box directly to emails. Available for PC only.
Note: You may have to restart your computer once you have installed the Box apps in order for them to work correctly.
Installing Box Apps on a University Owned PC
- Open Software Center, located in All Programs --> Microsoft System Center on the PC. (If you do not have Software Center, and are on a University-owned Windows PC, stop here, and contact ITSS for further assistance.)
- Install the three Box apps individually, by selecting each one and click Install.

- You may have to restart your computer for the Box Applications to appear and to function properly.
- If you click on "Open" to open a file and get the message "Unsupported filetype", you'll need to restart your computer. This is a not uncommon issue the first time you run Box Edit.
If the Software Center - Application Catalog installers fail, you may download the enterprise installers for:
Box Edit
Box for Office
Box for Office also requires Visual Studio 2010 Tools for Office Runtime available at https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=48217
We check for that and include that in the App Catalog deployments.
If the Application Catalog isn’t used, the Box for Office installer does not check for this prerequisite, Visual Studio 2010 Tools for Office Runtime must be checked for and installed manually.
