Why You’re Seeing the Cookie Consent Banner
What is the CSU cookie consent banner?
The cookie consent banner is a notice that appears when you visit a participating CSU website. It explains how CSU websites use cookies and gives you options to accept or manage non-necessary cookies.
Why am I seeing this banner?
CSU uses the cookie consent banner to:
- Be transparent about how cookies are used
- Give visitors choices about cookie usage
- Follow widely accepted privacy best practices
Where will the banner appear?
The banner appears on most public CSU campus websites and on the CSU Chancellor’s Office main website and related subdomains.
It typically appears on websites that do not require you to log in.
How often will I see the banner?
You will usually see the banner once every 12 months for each device and browser.
You may see it again if you:
- Clear your browser cookies
- Use a different device or browser
On shared or public computers, such as campus labs or libraries, the banner may appear more often.
Your Cookie Choices and Settings
What choices do I have when the banner appears?
When the banner appears, you can choose how non-necessary cookies are used:
- Accept All enables both necessary and non-necessary cookies, including analytics and personalization tools.
- Manage Preferences lets you opt out of non-necessary cookies while keeping necessary cookies enabled.
- Reject All (available within preferences) opts you out of all non-necessary cookies.
What happens if I close the banner using the “X”?
If you close the banner without making another selection:
- U.S. visitors are opted in to all cookies, including non-necessary cookies.
- Visitors in the EU or UK are opted out of non-necessary cookies.
Can I change my cookie preferences later?
Yes. You can change your cookie preferences at any time.
Scroll to the bottom of a participating CSU website and select the Cookie Settings link in the footer.
Understanding Cookie Types
What are “necessary” and “non-necessary” cookies?
Necessary cookies are required for basic website functions, such as security and page navigation.
Non-necessary cookies help CSU understand how websites are used so we can improve performance, accessibility, and user experience.
Using Shared or Public Computers
What should I do if I use a shared or public computer?
If you use a shared computer, review the cookie banner each time it appears.
Other users may change the settings after your session, so you may want to adjust your preferences again during future visits.
