If your Chico State username changes (e.g., due to a name change or correction), your ChatGPT Edu account will be reset, creating a new profile. This will result in the loss of previous chat history and settings. Additionally, in some cases, your old authentication profile may persist, preventing successful login with the new username.
Environment
This article is relevant to you if:
- You use ChatGPT Edu at Chico State.
- Your Chico State username or email address has changed or will change.
- You are unable to access your previous ChatGPT Edu account or have lost chat history and settings.
Solution
To restore access to your ChatGPT Edu account, follow these steps:
- Attempt to log in to ChatGPT Edu using your updated Chico State credentials.
- If you are unable to access your prior account or notice your chat history is missing, contact Chico State IT Support by submitting a ticket at support.csuchico.edu.
- In your request, provide:
- Your previous Chico State username.
- Your new Chico State username.
- A description of the issue (e.g., missing chat history, inability to log in).
- Chico State IT will coordinate with OpenAI Support to resolve the issue.
Please note that, at this time, we cannot migrate or merge your data into the new account.
Root Cause
OpenAI incorrectly assumes that a user’s email address is a stable, unchanging identity. In reality, usernames and email addresses can change due to name updates, corrections, or other reasons. This mismatch causes OpenAI to create a new user profile instead of linking the updated credentials to the existing account. The vendor is aware of this issue and is working to resolve it.
