Starting in September 2024, educational institutions using Google Workspace for Education must annually review and reconfirm parental consent for students under 18 to access Google Workspace Additional Services. These services include tools and features that can enhance learning and collaboration but are not core to Google’s education suite.
This article provides a list of the Google Workspace Additional Services that require parental consent.
Applications that Require Parental Consent
As of February 2025, the following services require explicit parental consent for students under 18 to access them:
- Applied Digital Skills
- Chrome Canvas
- Chrome Cursive
- Chrome Remote Desktop
- Chrome Web Store
- Colab
- Google Alerts
- Google Arts and Culture
- Google Books
- Google Earth
- Google Groups
- Google Maps
- Google My Maps
- Google News
- Google Photos
- Google Play
- Google Search Console
- Google Translate
- Looker Studio
- Managed Google Play
- Material Gallery
- NotebookLM
- Programmable Search Engine
- Scholar Profiles

These services are not automatically enabled for students under 18. Schools must obtain and verify parental consent before granting access.
Why Parental Consent Is Needed
Google requires parental consent for these services to ensure compliance with privacy and safety standards for students under 18. These tools may involve data sharing, location services, or other features that require additional oversight.
Chico State will notify you if consent is needed for your child to access these services. If parental consent is not granted, your child will not be able to use these additional services, but they will still have access to Google's core education tools (e.g., Google Drive, Google Classroom).
