Allow Multiple Attempts in Kaltura Video Quizzes

Quick Links: | Environment | Solution | Root Cause |

Instructors who use Kaltura Video Quizzes in Canvas may find that students are only allowed a single attempt, even if multiple attempts are enabled in the Canvas assignment settings. Unlike standard Canvas quizzes, Kaltura Video Quizzes require multiple attempts to be enabled within the Kaltura quiz settings.

Environment

This article is relevant to you if:

  • You are an instructor using Kaltura Video Quizzes in Canvas.
  • You want students to have multiple attempts on a Kaltura Video Quiz.
  • You have set multiple attempts in the Canvas assignment settings, but students are still limited to a single attempt.

Solution

To allow multiple attempts for a Kaltura Video Quiz, follow these steps:

  1. From Canvas, open My Media.
  2. Locate the video quiz you want to modify.
  3. Select Edit (you may need to choose Launch Editor if on the video edit page).
  4. In the Video Quiz Editor, open Quiz > Scores.
  5. Enable Allow Multiple Attempts.
  6. Set the number of attempts and choose which score to keep.
  7. When finished, select Done to save your changes.

Now, students will be allowed multiple attempts on the Kaltura Video Quiz based on the settings you configured.

Root Cause

When multiple attempts are set in Canvas for a Kaltura Video Quiz, the setting does not automatically apply to the Kaltura quiz itself. Canvas's multiple attempts setting only applies to native Canvas quizzes and assignments. External tools (LTIs), such as Kaltura, manage their own settings independently. This means that any LTI-based assignment, including Kaltura Video Quizzes, must typically have multiple attempts configured within the tool itself rather than relying on Canvas's settings.
