Add Media to the Shared Repository in Kaltura

Quick Links: | Prerequisites | Instructions | Troubleshooting |

The Shared Repository in Kaltura allows faculty to share media with other instructors within discipline-based categories. Once media is added to the Shared Repository, it can be embedded in any Canvas course without restrictions. You retain ownership of any media you contribute, meaning you can manage or remove it at any time. Note that unpublishing the media will not remove it from courses it has been embedded in.

This guide explains how to add media to the Shared Repository so it can be accessed by other faculty in your discipline.

Prerequisites

Before adding media to the Shared Repository, ensure the following:

  • You have a Canvas instructor role.
  • The media you want to share is already uploaded to My Media in Canvas.
  • You have metadata information ready for categorizing your media.

Step-by-Step Instructions

To add media to the Kaltura Shared Repository, do the following:

  1. From Canvas, open My Media.
  2. Locate the media you want to contribute and select Edit.
  3. In the edit page, select Click to add required metadata for shared repository.
  4. Assign the media to one or more discipline-based filters.
  5. Select Save.
  6. Navigate to the Publish tab.
  7. Change the publishing status to Published.
  8. From the list of publishing destinations, select Shared Repository.
  9. Select Save again to confirm.

Now, your media is available in the Shared Repository and can be accessed by other faculty in your discipline.

Troubleshooting

  • If you do not see the Shared Repository option, ensure that your media is Published rather than Private and added to the relevant filters .
  • If you cannot find your media in My Media, confirm that it was successfully uploaded and processed and that you have rights to edit and publish it.
  • Metadata is required for sharing; ensure you complete the metadata step before publishing.
