Read on to ensure you're fully prepared for the transition effective August 1, 2024.

What changes are being made to Chico State Google accounts?

Effective August 1, 2024, Chico State Google account names will be updated to match current @csuchico.edu email addresses. This change is part of the ongoing mail migration project aimed at unifying the account names across all Chico State services.

Am I losing access to my Chico State Google account?

No. You are not losing access to your Chico State Google account. You will continue to be able to access your Chico State Google account. After August 1, 2024, the email address you use to login to that account will change from [your username]@mail.csuchico.edu to [your username]@csuchico.edu to match all other campus systems.

Critical Google services, such as Google Drive, YouTube, Blogger, Android, Chrome, and ChromeOS, will still be accessible after the account name change.

Am I losing access to my Chico State email?

No, your ability to access your email on Outlook will not be affected by our update to your Chico State Google account name to match your @csuchico.edu email address. This change is specific to Google account names and does not impact Microsoft services. You can continue to use your @csuchico.edu email address as usual on Outlook.

Why is my Google account name changing?

In November 2022, Chico State moved all emails to use a consistent provider, Microsoft Outlook. This also resulted in all students' primary campus email address changing to use the @csuchico.edu domain name. This update is to transition Google Workspace accounts from the legacy account name format, @mail.csuchico.edu, to a consistent @csuchico.edu format across all platforms and services as part of a broader effort to streamline user access and management.

How do I find out which apps I use "Sign in with Google" for?

To identify which third-party services you use to sign in with your Google account, you can follow these steps:

  1. Visit the Google Account connections page by navigating to: https://myaccount.google.com/connections
  2. Select Sign In with Google.
  3. Here, you'll see a list of all the third-party apps and services where you have used your Google account to log in.

This page will provide you with details about each service, including what information you've shared with the app. From here, you can also manage these connections, update settings, or disconnect apps as needed to prepare for your email change.

Chico State will also provide a list of applications you’ve used with your @mail.csuchico.edu Google account. Specific guidance on how to manage the transition for each service will also be provided.

What do I need to do if I use “Sign in with Google” for third-party services such as Canva, Grammarly, or OpenAI?

After August 1st, using the @mail.csuchico.edu email for third-party services may result in loss of access. To maintain access:

  • Identify the third-party services you access with your Chico State Google account.
  • Back up any personal data stored on these services.
  • Update your email address or unlink the “Sign in with Google” option, as applicable.
  • Contact the app’s support team if you encounter difficulties in updating or unlinking your account.

Is my access to other Google Services like YouTube, Google Drive, Blogger, Android, Chrome, or ChromeOS affected?

Your access to other Google Services such as YouTube, Google Drive, Blogger, Android, Chrome, and ChromeOS will not be directly affected by the change in your account name from @mail.csuchico.edu to @csuchico.edu.

What should I avoid doing until after the account update on August 1st?

Avoid using your Chico State Google account to register for new third-party apps until after the transition to your updated account name.

I created an @csuchico.edu Google account for myself before the change. What happens to that account?

If you have a personal Google account that uses your @csuchico.edu email address, it will conflict with your official Chico State Google Workspace account after August 1st, 2024. This is because both accounts will be using the same email address.

When you sign in with your @csuchico.edu address after the change, Google will recognize the conflict and display a message saying, "An update to your account is required." You will be able to rename your personal Google account to a different email address that is not your @csuchico.edu address.

This renaming process allows you to keep both your personal and Chico State accounts active and separate. After updating your personal account's email address, you can continue using both accounts independently.

If you need help with this process, please contact the support team at googlesupport@csuchico.edu.

Will there be any assistance provided for transitioning third-party service accounts?

Yes, next month Chico State will provide a list of applications you’ve used with your @mail.csuchico.edu Google account. Specific guidance on how to manage the transition for each service will also be provided.

Who should I contact if I have questions or need help during this transition?

For any questions or assistance, you can contact Learning Technologies at googlesupport@csuchico.edu.
