Why does my Google account suddenly end in %csuchico.edu@gtempaccount.com?

Quick Links: | Prerequisites | Instructions | Troubleshooting |

On August 12, 2024, Chico State updated campus-managed Google accounts to use the @csuchico.edu domain. People who created non-managed Google accounts using an @csuchico.edu email address before the change have had their accounts renamed to end in %csuchico.edu@gtempaccount.com. Before August 12th, 2024, all Chico State-managed accounts ended in @mail.csuchico.edu. No Chico State-managed Google accounts used the @csuchico.edu domain.

Google requires users who created personal Google accounts with their @csuchico.edu emails to change the email associated with their Google account. This guide will walk you through the steps to either add Gmail to your account or change your Google Account email to a different one.

Transfer Files, Settings, and Other Data to Your Chico State Google Account

If you want to transfer your files, settings, and other data to your official Chico State Google account, you will need to manually copy the data from the old account to the new account. The most comprehensive transfer solution is to use Google Takeout to create a personal archive of your data. You can then upload that data into your official Chico State Google account. Here's how to transfer your Google Drive files, settings, and other data to another Google account:

  1. Sign in to your personal Google account.
  2. From your Personal Google account, go to the Google Takeout service.
  3. Select the services you want to export data for. To speed up the process, select only services you use.
  4. After selecting the data you want, choose Next step.
  5. From the Choose file type, frequency, and distribution page, pick the following settings:
    • Destination: Send download link via email
    • Frequency: Export once
    • File type: .zip
    • File size: choose any option. If you select one of the smaller options, you may need to download more files. Rest assured, any option you pick will still allow you to transfer all of your data.
  6. When you're ready, choose Create export.
  7. Google will begin collecting all of your data. This process can take several hours. Google will email you when your data is ready to download.

Once your export is finished processing, do the following:

  1. Open the email inbox for your personal Google account.
  2. Look for an email from Google Takeout.
  3. From the Google Takeout email, choose Download your files.
  4. When the download completes, open the .zip file and extract it.
  5. From the exported archive, use the provided Archive Browser to see a breakdown of your data in Google.
  6. You can also browse each of the folders in the archive to see all files. To learn more about the files, use the Archive Browser included in the archive.
  7. Most of the files can be uploaded or imported back into their respective Google services directly. Some types of files, such as those representing search history or social contributions, cannot be imported into another Google account. In Google Drive, files shared with you that you do not own will be shown as links to the file on Google Drive. To access these files on your official Chico State Google account, ask the owner to share them with you again.
