Chico State Email Setup for Thunderbird

The Outlook Desktop Apps and Office 365 Web Apps are the recommended and supported email clients for campus email. Thunderbird can work with campus email with limited features and support.

Configuring Thunderbird

  1. Open the Thunderbird application on your device
  2. If you've used Thunderbird before, select "Setup Another Account" and then "email"
    • You may need to instead go to File > New > Existing Mail Account
  3. On the setup window, enter:
    • Your full name
    • Email Address (username@csuchico.edu)
    • Chico State password
  4. Click "Continue" and enter your Chico State password again when prompted in the new window
  5. When prompted to "Enter justification..." after entering password, close the pop-up and navigate back to Thunderbird.Uploaded Image
  6. Under "Available Configurations", Select "Exchange/Office365". You may get a message to Install the Owl Plug-in. Click "Install".

  7. Owl is a paid, third party add-on. Information on how to download and pricing can be found on their website after clicking "Install".
  8. Once Owl is installed, restart Thunderbird, repeat the steps above, and click done.

  9. You will be prompted to approve the sign-in via Duo. 
  10. The next page should say "Account successfully created". Click "Finish" and your account should now be set up.
