Install Respondus
Respondus is an assessment authoring tool used to create and manage exams that can be printed or published directly to Canvas.
Respondus is only available for Windows devices. If you are on an Apple/Mac device, please contact IT Support Services to discuss your options.
If you are on a campus-managed device, you will be prompted for administrator credentials when installing Respondus. Please contact IT Support Services for assistance.
If you are on a personal device, please follow the steps below:
- Download Respondus 4.0.8.06 for Windows.
- Unzip the downloaded file.
- Run the installer .EXE file.
- Open Respondus.
- Go to the Help menu and select Check for Update.
Set Up Respondus for Canvas
- Log in to Canvas.
- Select Help from the sidebar menu.
- Select Start Search Here.

- Search for “Respondus.”
- Follow the search results to find the institution name, local support contact, and installation password.
- Enter the institution name, local support contact, and installation password into Respondus.
- Check for updates again and install any available updates.
- From the Start tab in Respondus, select the appropriate personality, such as Canvas.
- Select Chico State’s Canvas instance and follow the prompts to authenticate.
Resolve Installation Issues
- If you encounter issues during installation, confirm that you have administrative access to your machine.
- If you are on a campus-managed machine, contact IT Support Services for installation assistance.
- If the Respondus license key is not working, verify that you are using the most current password from Canvas.
