Dispose of an electronic device

Tags surplus

As a result of recent information security audit findings, the procedures for transferring and disposing of electronic devices (e.g. desktops, laptops, tablets, etc.) has changed. Effective July 1, 2015, all State and Foundation owned devices must be wiped by IT Support Services prior to being disposed of or transferred to another individual.

This procedure will permanently and securely erase all data from the device so that it may safely be disposed of or transferred to another user.

Electronic devices subject to this procedure include, but are not limited to:

  • Desktop/laptop computers
  • Servers
  • Tablets (iPads, iPods, Android tablets, Microsoft Surface, etc.)
  • Printers/Copiers
  • Disk drives and USB flash drives
  • Cell phones and PDAs
  • Electronic media, including CD-ROMs, backup tapes, and other removable storage
