Requirements
System Requirements
- Operating System: macOS 13 or later
- Memory: 2 GB RAM minimum
- Disk Space: 75 MB total (installation and logs)
- Network: Wired Ethernet or 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi (802.11b is not supported on campus wireless)
- Software: Fully updated macOS with automatic updates enabled
- Security: Antivirus with real-time protection enabled
Account Requirements
- Current faculty and staff meet access requirements by default.
- Volunteers and consultants must have department-sponsored access approved by completing the Volunteer, Guest, and Consultant Access form.
- Students can access OnDemand VPN:
Installing GlobalProtect VPN
- Open a web browser and go to https://vpn.csuchico.edu.
- Sign in using your Chico State username and password.
- Download the GlobalProtect client for macOS.
- Open the downloaded file and follow the on-screen installation prompts.
- Select Yes or Continue if prompted for permissions.
- When installation is complete, select Close.
Connecting to GlobalProtect VPN
- Select the GlobalProtect globe icon in the menu bar.
- When prompted for a portal address, enter vpn.csuchico.edu and select Connect.
- Sign in using your Chico State username and password.
- Approve the login request using Duo.
During the connection process, a browser window may open to complete Duo authentication. Please wait until the VPN connection is fully established before closing any browser windows.
If you are using macOS 15 or later, you may need to allow Palo Alto Networks to run in the background under Login Items in System Settings.

Troubleshooting GlobalProtect on macOS
Verify Internet Connectivity
- Confirm you are connected to the internet before starting the VPN.
- On campus, connect to the eduroam Wi-Fi network.
- GlobalProtect will not connect while using the csuchico Wi-Fi network.
Allow Palo Alto Networks in the Background
- Open System Settings.
- Select General, then Login Items & Extensions.
- Under Allow in the Background, ensure Palo Alto Networks is enabled.
Collecting GlobalProtect Log Files
Only collect and send log files when requested by IT Support Services.
- Select the GlobalProtect globe icon in the menu bar.
- Select the three horizontal lines menu.
- Select Settings.
- Open the Troubleshooting tab.
- Select Collect Logs.
- Select Open Folder to locate the GlobalProtectLogs.tgz file.
