Immediate Access courses at Chico State allow students to access required course materials, such as eBooks, directly through Canvas. Instructors can add these eBooks so students can view them seamlessly within their course. This guide explains two different ways to add an Immediate Access eBook to your Canvas course, ensuring students have quick and consistent access to their digital textbooks.
Prerequisites
To complete this guide you must have:
- Instructor access to the Canvas course
- An eBook adopted through the Wildcat Bookstore
Use eBooks in Canvas
There are two ways to add an eBook to an Immediate Access course. You can either enable My Bookstore Materials in your course navigation or add it directly in a module. Both methods connect students to their eBook.
Option 1: Add the eBook in Course Navigation
To add the eBook through course navigation, do the following:
- Open your Canvas course.
-
From the course sidebar, select Settings [1].

-
At the top of the page, select Navigation [2].

-
Scroll down to locate My Bookstore Materials [3]. Select the three dots, then select Enable.
-
Select Save [4] at the bottom of the page.

Now your students can access the eBook directly from the course navigation menu.
Option 2: Add the eBook in a Module
To add the eBook through a module, do the following:
- Open your Canvas course.
- From the course sidebar, select Modules.
- In the module where you want to add the material, select the + sign in the module title bar.
- From the drop-down menu, select External Tool.
- Scroll down and select My Bookstore Materials.
- In the pop-up window, select Add Item.
- You will be redirected to your Module page in Canvas.
Once you have created and published the My Bookstore Materials link, students will be able to access it. They may be prompted to load Kortext in a new window.
Troubleshooting
- If students report issues opening their eBook, make sure they are accessing it through the My Bookstore Materials link.
- For additional help, contact the Wildcat Bookstore at immediateaccess@csuchico.edu for verification.
