Google Transfer allows you to copy and migrate data from your Chico State (@csuchico.edu) Google account to another Google account. This is useful when you graduate, switch schools, or leave for another reason. Using Google Transfer, you can move Google Drive files and Gmail messages while keeping ownership of your copied files.
Prerequisites
- A Chico State Google account (@csuchico.edu)
- A personal Google account to transfer data to
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Prepare Your Files
To copy shared files, you must first add them to My Drive:
- Locate the shared file in Shared with me on Google Drive.
- Right-click the file and select Add shortcut to Drive.
- Choose a location in My Drive, then select Add shortcut.
2. Start the Copy Process
- On your Chico State account, go to Google Transfer.
- Enter the email address of your personal Google account.
- Select Send code.
- Open your personal Google account inbox and find the email from Google.
- Select Get confirmation code in the email to open a new tab with a code.
- Go back to the "Transfer your content" page on your Chico State account.
- Enter the code and select Verify.
- Choose the content you'd like to copy (Google Drive, Gmail, or both).
- Select Start transfer.
3. Monitor the Transfer
- The transfer process usually completes in a few hours but may take up to a week.
- Files may appear in batches in your personal Google Drive.
- Once the transfer is complete, Google will send a confirmation email to your Chico State account.
4. See Your Transferred Files
- Sign in to Google Drive with your personal Google account.
- Locate the folder labeled with your Chico State email and the date of transfer.
5. Changes to Copied Files
- You become the owner of all copied files.
- Copied files are not shared with others (you must manually share them if needed).
- Comments remain, but revision history is not transferred.
6. View Transfer History
To see details of your past transfers (within 30 days):
- Go to Google Transfer.
- Select Manage transfer history.
Troubleshooting
- If files do not transfer, ensure you are the owner or editor (view-only files will not copy).
- If the transfer is taking longer than expected, wait up to a week before retrying.
- If you did not receive a confirmation code, check your spam folder.
