Start the MacBook and choose basic settings
- Press the Power/Touch ID button in the upper-right corner of the keyboard. The MacBook will start and may play the startup sound.
- Select your preferred language, then select Continue.
- Select United States or your appropriate country or region, then select Continue.
- When asked whether you want to transfer information from another computer or backup, select Set Up as New, then select Continue.
- On the Accessibility screen, enable any accessibility features you would like to use. If you do not want to configure these features now, select Not Now. You can change accessibility settings later in System Settings.
Connect to eduroam and enroll the MacBook
If you are connecting to a home wifi network, skip this section.
- Select eduroam from the list of available Wi-Fi networks.
- Enter your full Chico State email address and password.
- When prompted, accept the eduroam certificate to complete the connection.
- When the Device Enrollment screen states that the MacBook is owned and managed by California State University, Chico, select Enroll.
- Wait while the MacBook completes its management setup. Device enrollment is required before you can continue using the computer.
Create your Mac account
- Review Apple's Data & Privacy information, then select Continue.
- When prompted to create your Mac account, enter:
- A profile picture, if desired
- Your full name
- An account name
- A password
- Choose whether to select Allow my Apple ID to reset this password.
- If selected, you will be prompted to sign in with your Apple ID.
- If not selected, Apple ID sign-in will be skipped.
- Review the Apple Terms and Conditions, then select Agree.
Choose privacy and personalization settings
During the remaining setup screens, macOS may ask you to configure several optional features. These settings can generally be changed later in System Settings.
- Location Services: Enable Location Services if you want apps such as Maps to determine your location. Otherwise, leave it disabled.
- Analytics: Leave Share Mac Analytics with Apple unselected, then select Continue.
- Screen Time: Enable Screen Time now or select Set Up Later in Settings.
- Apple Intelligence: Enable Apple Intelligence or select Set Up Later in Settings. You may also be asked whether to enable Summarize Notifications.
- Siri: Select Set Up Later in Settings to skip Siri setup, or select Continue to configure it. If you configure Siri, you can choose how Siri is activated, configure Hey Siri, select a voice, and choose whether to share audio recordings. Select Don't Share Audio Recordings if you do not want to send recordings to Apple.
Configure security and updates
- FileVault: If you enable FileVault and receive a Recovery Key, write down the key and store it in a secure location. You may need the Recovery Key if you forget your password.
- Touch ID: Set up Touch ID now or select Set Up Later in Settings. To configure Touch ID:
- Place your finger on the Touch ID button in the upper-right corner of the keyboard.
- Lift and replace your finger as instructed until the fingerprint scan is complete.
- Appearance: Select Light, Dark, or Auto according to your preference.
- Automatic Updates: Enable Automatic Updates to help keep the MacBook current with software and security updates.
Finish setting up your MacBook
When setup is complete, the macOS desktop will appear. Your Chico State rental MacBook is now ready to use.
