Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Ethernet with my desktop?

No, Ethernet connections are not available in the residence halls. To connect a desktop computer, you will need to purchase a wireless adapter. These are available from online retailers like Amazon or in-store at places like Best Buy. Once installed, you can connect your desktop to the eduroam network using your Chico State email address and password.

Can I use a personal wireless router?

Personal routers and access points are not allowed in residence halls. They interfere with the eduroam network and pose security risks.

Can I use a personal Wi-Fi printer?

No, wireless printers are not supported on the Chico State network. Please connect your printer using a USB cable.

Can I file share on the eduroam network?

Illegal file sharing is prohibited under the DMCA. Use of torrenting or P2P software can result in:

  • Loss of network access
  • Fines up to $150,000 per item
  • Disciplinary action from Student Judicial Affairs

More info and legal alternatives: File Sharing on ResNet

Will my smart device work (e.g., Alexa, Google Home)?

Devices like Alexa, Google Home, or smart plugs may not work because they require your phone and the smart device to be on the same network. Since your phone connects to eduroam and smart devices use csuchico, they won’t be able to communicate.

Smart TVs, game consoles, and Roku Stick or Amazon FireTV Sticks, however, work fine on csuchico.

When can I get help?
