Log in & Access Support
Covers account-related problems, including login and invitation failures and access issues. Make sure that you log into ChatGPT Edu using Chico SSO: Logging into ChatGPT Edu.
Who gets to use ChatGPT Edu?
You must be a current Chico State student, faculty, or staff member in a state-supported unit.
The following groups are not eligible for ChatGPT Edu access: Chico State Alumni, Professional & Continuing Education (PCE) students, Chico State Enterprises and Associated Students employees, campus guests or volunteers, as well as retired faculty and staff.
I received an invite but can't log into ChatGPT Edu
Once you receive the invitation to join Chico State's Workspace, it is recommended to:
- Wait several hours after receiving your invitation. Activation can take time, and access may not be immediate.
- Try logging in again using your Chico State email. You can follow our steps for Logging into ChatGPT Edu.
- Submit a ChatGPT Edu Support / Feedback ticket if you still cannot log in after 24 hours.
Once you can log in, follow our guide for Joining Chico State’s ChatGPT Edu Workspace and Managing Your Existing Account.
I lost access to ChatGPT Edu after changing my Chico State email or username
If your Chico State username changes (e.g., due to a name change or correction), your ChatGPT Edu account will be reset, creating a new profile. This will result in the loss of previous chat history and settings. Additionally, in some cases, your old authentication profile may persist, preventing successful login with the new username.
To restore access to your ChatGPT Edu account, follow these steps:
- Attempt to log in to ChatGPT Edu using your updated Chico State credentials.
- If you are unable to access your prior account or notice your chat history is missing, submit a ChatGPT Edu Support / Feedback ticket.
- In the ticket, please provide:
- Your previous Chico State username.
- Your new Chico State username.
- A description of the issue (e.g., missing chat history, inability to log in).
- Chico State can then work with OpenAI to resolve the issue.
- Chico State username or email address changes cause OpenAI to create a new user profile instead of linking the updated credentials to the existing account. The vendor is aware of this issue and is working to resolve it.
Important Note: At this time, we cannot migrate or merge your data into the new account.
What happens to my ChatGPT data when I leave Chico State?
Your ChatGPT data will be removed along with other account access when you leave the university. If you want to preserve your chats or custom GPTs, you can export your GPTs and Chats as a JSON file from your ChatGPT Edu account, then upload that file to a personal ChatGPT account.
Follow OpenAI's Guide on Transferring Conversations to another ChatGPT account.

Troubleshooting & Known Issues
What if I already have a paid ChatGPT account?
If you have a ChatGPT Plus or Pro subscription with your Chico State email, OpenAI will prorate it during the transition. Once you join the Chico State ChatGPT Edu workspace, your access to ChatGPT will be managed under CSU's systemwide license.
Why can't I find my chat history?
If your past ChatGPT Edu conversations are missing, try the following steps to restore them:
- Sign out, then back in. Make sure you are Logging into ChatGPT Edu with Chico SSO.
- If you previously had a personal ChatGPT account using your Chico State email, try to recall if you Transferred or Exported existing chat history.
- Make sure you are not signing in using Continue with Google or Continue with Microsoft Account.
- If you signed in using these instead of Chico SSO, you may be able to sign in temporarily to retrieve past chats.
- If you still cannot find your chat history, submit a ChatGPT Edu Support / Feedback ticket.
Why do I get a "Content failed to load" error in ChatGPT Edu?
ChatGPT Edu users have reported a bug when trying to create GPTs. The page crashes with an error stating "Content failed to load. Try again."
Our technical team has determined that this is an interaction between ad-blockers and ChatGPT Edu. To fix the issue, do one of the following:

- In Chrome, select the Extensions icon (puzzle piece) in the top-right corner, then toggle off the ad-blocker.
- In Firefox, go to Add-ons and themes from the menu, find your ad-blocker, and disable it.

- Add ChatGPT to the allowlist:
- Open your ad-blocker’s settings.
- Locate the option to allowlist or exclude specific websites.
- Add chat.openai.com and chatgpt.com to the allowlist.
- Refresh your page and the GPT creation process should work without any errors.
