Understand Box Drive Status Icons

Box Drive uses status icons to indicate the state of files and folders.

Status Icon Meaning
Blue cloud The item is synced and up to date.
Orange arrows The item is currently syncing.
Red exclamation mark The item encountered an error.
Red padlock The item is locked.

Resolve Box Drive Errors

Common Box Drive issues can often be identified through status icons and error notifications.

Issue What It Means Recommended Action
Red exclamation mark A file or folder failed to upload or update. Review the error details in Box Drive.
Problem Item notification Box Drive detected a sync issue. Review the error details and recommended resolution.
Missing status icons Box Drive may not be running correctly. Update or reset Box Drive.
Files are not syncing Box Drive is unable to complete synchronization. Review errors, update Box Drive, or reset Box Drive.

To view error details:

  1. Locate the Box Drive icon in the Windows notification area.
  2. Open Box Drive.
  3. Select the Settings icon.
  4. Review the listed errors.
  5. Select an error to view additional details.
  6. Select More to view Box Support documentation when available.

Update Box Drive

Box Drive automatically checks for updates when Windows starts. Most users do not need to update manually.

To manually update Box Drive:

  1. Close any files that are currently open from Box Drive.
  2. Locate the Box Drive icon in the Windows notification area.
  3. Right-click the Box Drive icon.
  4. Select Update.
  5. Select Update Box Drive.
  6. Wait for the update to complete.
  7. If Box Drive does not reopen automatically, launch it from the Start menu.

Reset Box Drive

 Important: Resetting Box Drive removes locally cached content and offline files from your computer. Files stored in Box remain available in the cloud. Review any unsynced files before continuing.

Review Unsynced Files Before Resetting Box Drive

  1. Open the Windows Start menu.
  2. Enter:
    %localappdata%\box\box\unsyncedfiles
  3. Review the folder contents.
  4. Move any unsynced files to another location before continuing.

Note: Files in this location may not be stored in Box. Do not delete them until you have verified they are no longer needed.

Sign Out of Box Drive

  1. Locate the Box Drive icon in the Windows notification area.
  2. Right-click the Box Drive icon.
  3. Select Log Out.

Sign Back In to Box Drive

  1. Open Box Drive from the Start menu.
  2. Sign in using your Chico State account.

Note: Box Drive may run slower than normal for the first day after a reset while local cache files and indexes are rebuilt.
