TidyUP Will Not Open or Displays an Authentication Error

Quick Links: | Environment | Solution | Root Cause |

When opening TidyUP in Canvas, the tool may fail to load or display an authentication, missing-credentials, access-denied, or technical “OIDC flow” error. This often occurs when browser privacy settings block the cross-site access TidyUP needs to open within Canvas.

Environment

This article may apply if:

  • TidyUP does not open from your Canvas course.
  • You see an authentication, missing-credentials, missing-access-token, or access-denied message.
  • You see a technical error containing terms such as “OIDC flow failed” or “Missing information.”
  • You are using a browser with strict privacy settings or blocked third-party cookies.

Solution

Try the instructions for your browser, and then reload TidyUP.

Google Chrome

  1. Open your Canvas course and select TidyUP.
  2. In the address bar, look for a message or icon indicating that third-party cookies are blocked.
  3. Select it and temporarily allow third-party cookies for the site.
  4. Reload the page.

You can also go to Chrome Settings → Privacy and security → Third-party cookies and add an exception for the affected site.

Microsoft Edge

  1. Open your Canvas course and select TidyUP.
  2. If Edge indicates that cookies or site data were blocked, temporarily allow them for the site.
  3. Reload the page.

You can also go to Edge Settings → Privacy, search, and services → Cookies and add an allowed site.

Mozilla Firefox

  1. Open Firefox and select the menu button in the upper-right corner.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Privacy & Security.
  4. Under Enhanced Tracking Protection, select Standard.
  5. Reload TidyUP.

If you use Custom protection, confirm that it is not configured to block all cross-site cookies.

Safari on Mac

  1. Open Safari.
  2. Select Safari → Settings.
  3. Select Privacy.
  4. Temporarily clear Prevent cross-site tracking.
  5. Confirm that Block all cookies is not selected.
  6. Reload TidyUP.

After using TidyUP, you may re-enable Prevent cross-site tracking. Re-enabling it may cause the TidyUP error to return.

If TidyUP Still Does Not Open

Try opening Canvas in another supported browser.

If the problem continues, contact the Technology & Learning Program. Include:

  • The complete error message
  • The browser you are using
  • A screenshot of the error, if possible
  • The Canvas course in which the error occurred

Some authentication errors may be caused by a Canvas or TidyUP configuration issue and cannot be resolved through browser settings.

Why This Happens

TidyUP is a separate service that opens within Canvas. To confirm that you are signed in, the two systems must exchange limited login information. Browser settings that block cross-site cookies or tracking can sometimes interrupt that process. Some authentication errors may instead indicate a problem with the Canvas or TidyUP configuration and must be resolved by campus support.
