If you want your Mac to print in Black and White (B/W) by default to MFPs, you will need to configure a preset. You are able to create this from any program that you can print from, but Microsoft Word is the easiest way to do so. Once the preset is in place you only need to select that preset and then your settings (B/W default) will apply to your print jobs. Below are provided instructions for Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat and Safari. Most other programs have similar menus to one of these three programs, though some items might be in slightly different places. If you are unable to find the settings you are looking for and you've confirmed you have installed the correct driver then please submit a ticket so that we may assist.
Microsoft Word
Once you hit Print in Microsoft word the print menu will appear. From this menu click where it says "Copies and Pages"
And then from the dropdown click "Quality". If the Quality option does not appear then you may not have the correct driver installed for the MFP. Please see this page for instructions on how to install the correct driver: https://support.csuchico.edu/TDClient/KB/ArticleDet?ID=72510
Then on the next menu under the "Color mode:" heading, click where it says "Color" and switch to "Black and White":
Creating Preset
Then click on the "Presets:" dropdown, then click "Save Current Settings as Preset...':
And then you can name your preset whatever you'd like, i'd recommend something like "B/W" for clarity. You can make this preset available for only this printer or for all printers, depending on if you want to be able to set your other devices to print B/W only. Click OK to close the window, and then your preset will be available to use.
Whenever you go to print from any program if you click on the presets field like above you'll see the preset you just created, and can select it for use. Usually by default the last preset you used will be the default, so you will likely only have to set this once per program.
The following instructions are these same steps for two other programs: Adobe Reader and Safari. If you completed the above steps you do not need to proceed through these next steps. The next steps are provided for those that specifically need these instructions for those two programs, in case they don't use Microsoft Word for example.
Adobe Acrobat
These instructions are how to set up B/W default for Adobe Acrobat. If you completed the above instructions for Microsoft Word then you do not need to complete these next instructions, as you can just use the preset you configured above.
Once you click print in Adobe this window will appear, click "Printer..." at the bottom left:
If this window appears click "Yes"
If you see the smaller window below then click "Show details", and then click on the dropdown where it says "Layout":
In the layout dropdown click "Quality". If the Quality option does not appear then you may not have the correct driver installed for the MFP. Please see this page for instructions on how to install the correct driver: https://support.csuchico.edu/TDClient/KB/ArticleDet?ID=72510
Then in the "Color Mode:" section select "Black and White":
You can then create a Preset using the "Creating Preset" instructions in the Microsoft Word section above.
Safari
These instructions are how to set up B/W default for Safari. If you completed the above instructions for Microsoft Word then you do not need to complete these next instructions, as you can just use the preset you configured above.
In the print window that appears click on the dropdown where it says "Safari" and then click "Printer Features":
Then in the "Feature Sets:" section click where it says "Finishing", then click "Quality". If the Quality option does not appear then you may not have the correct driver installed for the MFP. Then where it says "Color Mode:" Click "Color" and then select "Black and White":
