Box Edit Unable to Save Files

Tags Box BoxDrive

Box Edit (also known as Box Tools) is a software component of Box that allows users to open files from Box in a web browser using the apps installed on their computer.

Errors may occur in Box Edit if a file is opened from Box in a web browser and then that file is deleted from Box.

If this occurs, you will see the following message when trying to save the file or after restarting your computer.

Closing this window will result in Box Edit creating a copy of the file and saving it to your desktop.

If the error is not corrected, Box Edit will continuously create copies of the file and save them to your desktop.

To correct this error, follow these steps:

Step 1.    Navigate to the Box Edit cache folder.

  1. Type or copy/paste the path “%localappdata%\Box\Box Edit” (without quotation marks) in the Windows Start Menu search bar.

  1. Windows 10 users will not have a search bar if Cortana is hidden but they can still type the path or copy/paste it using “CTRL+V” while the Windows Start Menu is open even though a search bar is not present.

Step 2.    Once in the Box Edit cache folder, navigate to the Documents folder and open it.

  1. If this folder is not immediately present try searching for “Documents” using the file explorer search function.

Step 3.    The folders inside the Documents folder will have a series of letters and numbers as their names. Find the folder that corresponds to the file that is unable to save.

  1. You can use the search function to quickly find the file in question.

Step 4.    Once the file is located, you can delete it.

Step 5.    You may also delete all the copies Box Edit created and saved to your desktop.
