Overview

What is Duo Restore?

Chico State has enabled Duo Restore for Duo Mobile. Duo Restore allows you to back up your Duo-protected accounts in the event that you lose or break your main Duo Mobile device. While this is not required, it is highly encouraged. If you are unable to set up Duo Restore or backup your Duo account, it is encouraged to have a secondary device.

Note: Restoring or reactivating any Duo-protected accounts on a new device will deactivate Duo on an old device.

How do I set up a secondary device?

Chico State encourages users to always have a secondary device for Duo access. For example, if your phone dies or you forget it at home. For most people, this may mean requesting a Duo Token as a secondary device for their mobile phone. You could also set up an iPad or Tablet with the Duo Mobile App.

Duo Restore for iOS (iPhone/iPad)

Setting up Duo Restore

Before you begin, please make sure that you are running the latest version of the Duo Mobile app on your device.

  1. Navigate to your iOS Settings and make sure your device is backed up to iCloud. Go to Settings > Apple ID > Select your device > iCloud Backup and turn on the backup feature. You can find additional instructions from Apple on How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.
  2. Once you have turned on Backup, you will also need to enable the iCloud Keychain. Go to Settings > iCloud > Passwords and Keychain and turn on iCloud Keychain. You can find additional instructions from Apple on how to Set up iCloud Keychain.

Due to the iOS backup functionality, your Duo account will be backed up automatically. You will not see a notification confirming the setup.

Using Duo Restore

The following process can be done on your new iOS device to retrieve a Duo backup from an older device. This should be done during device setup.

  1. When you see the "Transfer Your Apps & Data" select the option for From iCloud Backup. You can follow Apple's instructions on how to Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a backup. You will then be prompted to sign in with your Apple ID.
    1. It is recommended to choose the most recent backup, as that was likely the most similar to your old device.
  2. Make sure to enable iCloud Keychain on the new device.
  3. Download the Duo Mobile App from the App Store, if it doesn't install automatically.
  4. Open Duo Mobile and tap Continue on the welcome screen. Your Chico State account should automatically appear on the screen.

  4. When prompted, enter and confirm a recovery password. Do not lose or forget this password. It cannot be recovered.

Using Duo Restore

Please note, this requires you to have access to your old Android device to complete.

  1. From your new device, download the Duo Mobile App from the Google Play Store.
  2. Open the Duo Mobile app and tap I have existing accounts from the welcome screen.
  3. Duo Mobile will check for a previous backup in Google Drive. Select or sign into the account you used to set up Duo Restore.
