Please note: This setup and installation process is meant specifically for Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, other Linux flavors have not been tested with this process.

If you get an error stating “You do not appear to satisfy the conditions to receive this software license key” make sure you use the link from BrightSpace. If you do not use that link, you may experience issues when registering for VMWare.

Requesting a License Key

  1. Start by requesting a VMWare license from IT Support Services. You can submit a request here:
  2. Once that has been completed, create and register your account via the email from info@itacademy.brightspace.com.
  3. Once logged in, navigate to the course called "Software Products & License Keys"
  4. Click the link in step one that says "Software License Catalog"
  5. In the Catalog, you should see a list of all the licenses you can request, for this setup you would want to request a license for VMware Workstation 16 Pro
  6. After you click request, you'll see the following message:
Thank you for requesting your VMWare Workstation 16 Pro license key.

The key will be sent to you soon (this may take up to 12 hours).
If you do not receive your email within 12 hours please check your spam folder, if you still do not see it, please email itacademy@vmware.com to request it directly.

  7. From here, please wait 12-24 hours to receive the email with the requested license key.

Installing VMWare

  1. To begin the installation, you can click the link on the "Software Products & License Keys" page. Make sure you download the same version you requested the key for!
  2. On the Downloads page click on the "Download Now" link for Workstation 16 Pro for Linux to begin downloading the .bundle file of the application
  3. Once the file has been downloaded, go into the properties menu of the file by right-clicking on the file and setting the "Allow executing file as program" check within the permissions tab
  4. Next, access the terminal by right-clicking anywhere in the file manager window and clicking "Open in Terminal". Make sure that you are in the same directory as the file
  5. In the terminal type in sudo ./[ name of file ] and click enter. It should prompt you for your password and then start installing itself

Configuring VMWare

  1. Now that VMWare is installed, go into your Applications menu and start the application
  2. Once the application starts, it will prompt you to install several modules that need to be compiled and loaded into the kernel. Click install. It will then prompt you for your password to authenticate. Once the modules are installed and loaded, you should be shown the End User License Agreement. Click Next
  3. You will then be asked if you would like to have the application check for updates upon system startup, it is suggested you have Yes checked to have the most up-to-date version of VMWare installed
  4. Toward the end of the installation process, you will be prompted to register VMWare using a license key
  5. You will then be prompted for your password again to complete the installation

If you run into any issues, VMWare has provided these additional instructions for troubleshooting license issues.
