This article will guide new students through the process of claiming their Chico State account, setting up security questions, and creating a password. It also explains how to check application status and what services become available after enrollment.

Welcome to Chico State!

The following instructions are for new students claiming their Chico State account.

Important Note: If you have previously applied to, attended, or worked at Chico State, the following process will not work and will result in the following error: 
 
"Your account has been claimed. Please contact your Administrator."
 
If you get this error, please try walking through the Reset Chico State Password (Portal Password) process or contact IT Support Services.

Claiming Your Chico State Account

You should receive an email from the Office of Admissions when your Chico State account has been created. The email will include your Chico State ID number, which you'll need for the following steps. If you don’t have your ID number, contact the Office of the Registrar. 

1. Navigate to the Chico State Portal.
2. Under "Students" on the right, click New Student Account.
3. Enter your Chico State ID number and Birth Date into the appropriate field and click Submit. 
   • If you get a "Your account has been claimed. Please contact your Administrator." error, please try walking through the Reset Chico State Password (Portal Password) process or contact IT Support Services.
4. The next screen should display your Chico State username. Make sure to save this!
5. Complete the account setup, including Setting up Security Questions. Please note that the Security Questions are case-sensitive.
   
    
6. On the next screen, Create a Password. The Chico State password requirements will be listed on the side of the screen.
   
    
7. Check your Password Recovery and Chico State Alerts Information. For more details, visit Chico State Alerts. 
   
    
8. Once you've claimed and set up your account, you should now be able to sign into the Chico State Portal. 

Account Access

What can I access with my new account?

With your new Chico State account, you can track your application status through the Student Center.

1. Navigate to the Student Center. You can do this using the link in the Chico State Portal.
2. In the left sidebar, scroll to Admissions and click Application Status.
3. On this menu, you will see all current, active applications.
4. Click the arrow > to expand the application and view details including application status.

Applicants and admitted students have limited access until they enroll in courses or attend orientation. Afterward, they will gain access to their Chico State email, Canvas, and Google Applications.
