The Gemini Canvas integration brings Google Gemini AI into Canvas so you can provide students with guided, course-specific AI support. With Gemini LTI, you can add links to pre-designed NotebookLM notebooks and Google Gems directly inside your course, reducing the need to download and re-upload media to other platforms. Students can then study and learn from your curated sources, and interact with assets like videos, mind maps, flash cards, quizzes, briefing documents, and audio podcasts. This guide explains how to request Gemini LTI access in a Canvas course or prep area and choose where it appears for your students.
Prerequisites
Request Gemini LTI for Canvas
To request Gemini LTI be enabled for a Canvas course or prep, do the following:
- Identify each Canvas course or prep where you want Gemini LTI enabled, and note the course name or URL.
- Decide where you want Gemini LTI to appear in your course. Choose one or more of the following placements:
- Course Navigation
- Module Item
- Rich Content Editor (RCE)
- Submit your request to Learning Technology Services with:
- The name or URL of each course or prep
- The placement option(s) you want enabled (course navigation, module item, and/or Rich Content Editor)
If you select the Course menu item placement, note that it will not automatically display NotebookLM or Gem links you add in modules or pages. This does not disrupt Canvas requirements or prerequisites. If you also want your course notebooks to appear inside the Gemini LTI menu item, open the Gemini LTI menu item, then use Add to course to add your NotebookLM or Gem links there.
Once enabled, you can link to NotebookLM notebooks or Gemini Gems in the locations you selected so students can access your customized experience directly in Canvas.
Troubleshooting
-
Gemini LTI is not available in your course: Gemini LTI is not enabled by default. If you do not see it where expected, confirm your request included the correct course/prep and the correct placement option(s).
-
Students cannot add to your NotebookLM: This is expected. Students can study and interact with your NotebookLM content, but they cannot add items to your NotebookLM.
-
Students need to submit their own notebook for editing: If you assign students to create their own notebooks, students can use the plug icon in the Rich Content Editor (RCE) to submit their notebook to you so you receive edit rights.
