Windows 10 will reach end of life on October 14, 2025. Before that date, you must upgrade your Chico State device to Windows 11.

If your device is ineligible for an upgrade, please contact IT Support Services to discuss your options.

Time Requirement

The upgrade may take up to 3 hours to complete and will be done in two parts:

Downloading & Installing: up to 2 hours. This is done in the background and your PC is still usable at this time.

Restarting & Upgrading: up to 1 hour. Your PC will be unusable at this time

We recommend starting the Downloading & Installing process a few hours before the end of your workday (2 pm - 3 pm) so that the Restarting & Upgrading process is ready but the end of your day (5 pm). This would have the least amount of impact on your regular day-to-day work.

Device Eligibility

Not all devices will be eligible for this upgrade. The easiest way to identify if your device is eligible for the Windows 11 upgrade is to see whether or not you see Windows 11 in the Updates tab in the Software Center.

Upgrading Your Device

The following steps will guide you through an in-place upgrade, which should not impact any of your data or installed software. However, we recommend backing up any important files beforehand to prevent potential data loss.

If you'd prefer to have your device wiped and reimaged, please submit a support ticket.

  1. Open Software Center on your PC. You can do this by clicking the Start icon.
  2. In Software Center, click the Updates tab on the left sidebar. If eligible you should see the option for Windows 11 upgrade. If you do not see it, please check your device eligibility.
  3. Select Update from the list and you will be prompted with the option to install it.
  4. Clicking Install will begin the download. This may take a couple of hours to complete. During this time, you can continue to use your device.
  5. After Windows 11 has finished downloading and installing in the background, you will be prompted to restart your device.
  6. Click Restart. This will take 30 minutes to an hour to complete. Your device will not be usable during this time.
