Article Summary
Claude for Education is an artificial intelligence (AI) service available to a limited number of Chico State faculty and staff for approved use cases. Because the number of available licenses is extremely limited, access must be requested and is granted for a limited period.
This article explains how to request Claude access, sign in to the CSU Claude workspace, install the Claude desktop application on a campus-managed computer, and understand some of the differences between Claude for Education and ChatGPT Edu.
Important: Access to Claude is not required to use generative AI at Chico State. ChatGPT Edu remains available separately and provides many comparable capabilities. Claude licenses should be requested when your work aligns with the supported use cases described below.
Request Access to Claude
Claude licenses are available to Chico State faculty and staff for a limited set of use cases. Current request categories include:
- Faculty conducting intensive research
- Staff conducting advanced data and financial modeling
- Other — requests that do not fit one of the categories above require additional justification and will be reviewed based on the proposed use case.
License availability is extremely limited. If all available Claude licenses are assigned, approved users may be placed on a waitlist for a future access period.
To request access:
- Open a AI Support Ticket.
- Select Faculty or Staff.
- Select Request Claude access
- Select the use case that best describes how you intend to use Claude:
- Faculty conducting intensive research
- Staff conducting advanced data and financial modeling
- Other
- In the description field, describe how you plan to use Claude. Include enough information for the request reviewers to understand the project, work, or research that requires access.
- Submit the service request.
- If your request is approved and a license is available, a technician will provision your access. It may take up to 24 hours after provisioning for access to become available.
Claude Access Periods
Claude licenses are assigned for a limited access period rather than permanently. At the end of your assigned period, you will need to submit a new request if you need continued access.
Wave 1: Today -> Jan 15, 2027
Wave 2: Jan 19th 2027 -> September 1st, 2027
Because licenses are extremely limited, submitting a renewal request does not guarantee continued access. License availability and approved use cases will be considered when access is reassigned.
Sign In to Claude
After your access has been provisioned, use your Chico State account to sign in to the CSU Claude workspace.
- Browse to Claude.ai.
- Enter your Chico State email address ending in @csuchico.edu.
- Click Continue with SSO.
- On the CSU sign-in page, select Chico as your campus.
- Click Login.
- When the Chico State sign-in page appears, enter your Chico State credentials and complete Duo authentication if prompted.
- After authentication is complete, Claude will open your workspace.
Confirm You Are in the CSU Workspace
After signing in, confirm that you are using the CSU-managed Claude workspace rather than a personal or free Claude account.
- Look in the lower-left corner of Claude for your account and workspace information.
- Confirm that you see the CSU workspace and that your account information identifies the CSU environment, including a username associated with calstate.ai.
- If you do not see the CSU workspace, select your account or workspace in the lower-left corner.
- Switch from your personal or free Claude workspace to the CSU workspace.
Why this matters: It is possible to have both a personal Claude account and access to the CSU Claude workspace using the same or related account information. Before working with university information, confirm that you are in the CSU workspace.
Install the Claude Desktop App
Claude can also be installed as a desktop application on Chico State-managed Windows and Mac computers.
- Follow the instructions in Accessing Software Center, Company Portal, and Self Service on Campus-Managed Devices to open the appropriate software installation tool for your computer.
- On a Windows computer, open Company Portal. On a Mac, open Self Service.
- Find Claude in the available applications and select the option to install it.
- After installation is complete, open Claude and sign in using your Chico State account and the CSU workspace as described in the Sign In to Claude section above.
Note: The installation instructions above apply to Chico State-managed computers. You can also use Claude through a web browser at Claude.ai without installing the desktop application.
Choose Between Claude and ChatGPT Edu
Claude for Education and ChatGPT Edu are separate generative AI services. They have many comparable capabilities, but their features, terminology, integrations, and usage limits are not identical.
Because Claude licenses are extremely limited, users should generally request Claude when its capabilities are particularly well suited to their approved use case rather than simply as an alternative interface for general AI chat.
