Proctorio is available as in Canvas for course sections whose departments have arranged and funded access. Because licensing is based on course use and enrollment, Proctorio must be authorized for the specific course section before it can be enabled in their respective Canvas course.
Before Requesting Proctorio
- Confirm departmental approval and funding for Proctorio.
- Identify the specific Canvas course section(s) where Proctorio will be used.
- Estimate expected enrollment.
- Plan to communicate with students that Proctorio will be used in the course, including any required technology, testing expectations, and where students can find support or accommodation information.
Early communication is important so students are not surprised by proctoring requirements after the course begins.
Request Proctorio
- Discuss the proposed use of Proctorio with your department and obtain approval for the licensing cost.
- Provide the department with the course section and expected enrollment.
- Have the department representative contact Chico State's Proctorio licensing representative to arrange licensing and payment.
- Proctorio will confirm the authorized course section with Chico State's Canvas administrators
- After authorization is received, the Canvas administrators will enable Secure Exam Proctor in the approved Canvas course. Note: Proctorio is enabled only for the course sections included in the licensing agreement. Access does not automatically carry over to another section or future semester.
Procurement Professionals: Proctorio has already completed Information Technology Procurement Review (ITPR). Your department does not need to open a separate ITPR for Proctorio.
After Proctorio Is Enabled
Once Secure Exam Proctor appears in the course, review Using Proctorio in Canvas: A Faculty Workflow for guidance on:
- Configuring Proctorio-enabled assessments
- Creating a representative practice quiz
- Preparing students for the testing experience
- Configuring accommodations and exceptions
- Reviewing completed attempts and flagged activity

Secure Exam Proctor Does Not Appear
Confirm with your department that:
- Licensing and payment were completed
- The correct Canvas course section was included
- Proctorio sent authorization for that section to Chico State
If licensing has been completed for the correct course but Secure Exam Proctor is still unavailable, contact Learning Technology Services.
