Duo's self-enrollment process makes it easy to register your phone and install the Duo Mobile application on your smartphone or tablet. Use the following guide to walk through the steps of enrolling a new device.

If you have previously set up Duo and need to re-set up the app on a new device or get an error that Duo is "Disabled", you may be prompted for an authentication code or QR code. If so, follow the "Adding a New Device" section of this article.

First-time Enrollment

If you are new to Chico State, you will be prompted to complete self-enrollment for Duo the first time you sign in to a campus service.

Welcome to Duo Security

  1. Open a web browser and sign in to the Chico State Portal. Click Get Started to begin.
  2. Choose a setup option: Duo Mobile (recommended), Face ID/Touch ID, or Security Key (not provided).

IT Support Services strongly recommends using the Duo Mobile app as your primary authentication method.

Face ID and Touch ID only work on the original device and may not be reliable if you switch devices. If you set up Face ID / Touch ID, also set up Duo Mobile. If you did not set up the Duo Mobile app, follow the steps under Common Setup Issues.

Setup the Duo Mobile App

  1. Install Duo Mobile from your smartphone’s app store.
  2. On the Duo enrollment screen, select Duo Mobile from the list of options.
  3. Choose your country and enter your phone number, then click Add phone number.
  4. Activate Duo Mobile by scanning the QR Code with the app's built-in QR Code scanner.

    • Can't scan the QR Code? Click Get an activation link instead and follow the instructions.
  5. After activating your device, you should receive a confirmation screen.

You can learn about using the Duo Mobile app in our article on Authenticating using Duo.

Setup Face ID / Touch ID

After setting up the Duo Mobile app, you can also set up a biometric login. Face ID / Touch ID is only supported on devices with this type of platform biometric sensors.

  1. Choose Face ID / Touch ID to set this up.
  2. Walk through the on-screen instructions to set up Face ID / Touch ID as a Duo Security method.

Important note: If you enable Face ID / Touch ID, you must also set up Duo Mobile as a backup. Without it, you may be locked out of your account when switching devices.

Enroll a New Device or Method

Note: This method of adding a new device requires you to either have an old device, Duo Token, or Face ID / Touch ID to authenticate.

If you do not have any of the above, put in a ticket for help with Duo Multifactor Authentication.

Access Your Duo Devices Page

If you already use Duo and need to set up a new device, you won’t see the self-enrollment prompt. Instead, follow these steps:

  1. Open an incognito/private browser window.
  2. Log in to the Chico State Portal.
  3. On the Duo window, select Other options then Manage devices
    Manage Devices under Other options

  4.  You will have to authenticate to get to the next screen. Choose to Send a Push to the old device, Face ID / Touch ID to use a biometric verification, or Enter a Passcode from a token generator. After authenticating in, you'll see a screen that says "You're Verified. Sending you to the devices page".

Set Up a New Authentication Device

On the Devices page, you will be able to see all devices attached to your account.

  1. If you are setting up the Duo Mobile App on a new phone with the same phone number, you can select the I have a new phone option.
  2. If you do not see your device listed or if you are changing the phone number, you will choose the Add a device option and walk through the on-screen steps.

  3. Congratulations! Your device is ready to approve Duo authentication requests. After clicking Back to login, you can test the Duo Push option to give it a try. All you need to do is tap Approve on the Duo login request received on your phone.

Configuring Devices (Optional)

You can use the Devices page to give your phone a more descriptive name, remove old devices, or you can click Add a device to start the enrollment process again and add a second phone or another authenticator.

Enabling Duo Backups

Chico State has enabled Instant Restore for Duo Mobile. The Instant Restore allows you to back up your Duo-protected accounts in the event that you lose or break your main Duo Mobile device. While this is not required, it is highly encouraged.

You can find instructions for Enabling Duo Instant Restore on our Knowledge Base.
